I've always wanted to design a house, which is one of the main reasons why we bought land and are building a custom home.

Looking at floorpans is like eating chocolate to me, something I could literally do all day! And, as a child, I'm pretty sure I learned how to read a floor plan before I learned how to spell my own name! LOL ;) [Read more about how we became house flippers, here]

So, getting the opportunity to design a house was one of the coolest things I've done, and definitely my favourite part so far!! I mean, I got to DESIGN a HOUSE from scratch!! Like for real, with graph paper and a pen! It was so much fun!

Designing a house means you get to be super creative and dream about what you want your home to look like. You get to decide exactly how you want each room to function, where you want your kitchen to go, how big you want your shower to be and how many windows you want etc. You get to make all the decisions and you can make your house exactly how you want it to be. This is the beauty (and really exciting part) of building a custom home.

BUT, you still have to work within the height restrictions and requirements of your lot. We had a certain amount of square footage to work with (due to the irregular shape of our lot and certain lot set backs on all sides, that we had to stay within). So, it was a little bit challenging at times (sort of like a puzzle), trying to fit all the elements we wanted into the space, while still creating an airy open flow.

AND, HERE ARE THE BLUEPRINTS!!

After designing the house, an architect/engineer takes my little graph paper drawings and turns them into the final blueprints. We had to make a few small changes to the design (we moved the door to the garage from the landing to the foyer & made one large linen closet upstairs instead of two smaller ones), but other than that, everything else stayed the same.

It was SO cool to see everything come to life in blueprint form!

THE BEST PART OF ALL THIS?!

My handsome hubby gives me total free reign on all things design!! (Insert heart emojis) The only thing he asked for was a man cave...that he has already named the "Raptors Den"...because, well...#wethechamps

We can't wait to start building the house! Hopefully soon!!
Stay tuned!

Sandy
